WHY DETROIT?
Word & World believes that it is time to put our energy behind movement work in Detroit, a city that has been “ground zero” not only of economic crisis, but also of hope and resistance. It is time to explore the connections among land justice, food security, sustainability and the face of contemporary movement work in a municipality that is under assault by forces that serve to disenfranchise people. The school will allow space for the spirit of that particular land to tell the story of the struggle for eco-justice.
TRI-CULTURAL/TRI-SPIRITUAL CONVERSATION
Now approaching ecological crises require new stories that counter capitalist, consumerist narratives behind this culture’s policies and practices. Though the Biblical tradition has long served narratives of domination, colonization and exploitation, we believe that a radical thread runs through Scripture, from the law to the prophets to the second testament--a tradition that represents an uncompromising break with the “business as usual” of domination and oppression. The Biblical tradition must be remembered and re-imagined to be an ally in the struggle for creation.
Yet, we know that Christians are behind in this work and have a lot of learning and listening to do. So this school is a tri-cultural, tri-spiritual encounter bringing together Christian, hip-hop, and indigenous peoples to dig deep into the questions of land, water, and environmental justice. Here on equal footing, hip-hop visioning will meet Biblical inspiration, ancestral self-determination trade wisdom with anti-oppression spirituality, indigenous sovereignty make common cause with theological liberation. Work towards a shared future of social justice and ecological sustainability will actively embrace creative inspiration rooted in struggle to decolonize this land, our minds and cultures, and the traditions that move and define us.
